Claude Opus 4.7 tops the 2026-10-18 YZ Index Smoke quick test with 81.91 points across 14 models, followed by Doubao Pro at 77.34 and Grok 4 at 72.09. Several models posted steep single-day declines, which the brief treats as monitoring signals rather than long-term conclusions.
Anthropic is offering Blackstone a yield above 10% to subscribe to $9 billion of the subordinated tranche of a $60 billion chip-specific debt codenamed "Project North Star," funding the purchase of roughly 1.5 gigawatts of Google TPUs through a special purpose vehicle.
Anthropic has quietly circulated a draft frontier AI safety bill to Capitol Hill staff that would bar the government from banning a model unless it can prove more than $1 billion in losses or at least 50 deaths or serious injuries. The proposal, modeled on California’s SB 53, would concentrate authority over model bans in a single federal court process and preempt stricter state rules.
The DNA inside our cells isn’t just a series of instructions, but something far more dynamic. Like scientists, AI models don't yet have the data to properly decode it.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has issued civil investigative demands exceeding 50 pages each to OpenAI and Anthropic, requiring safety incident records, safeguards, marketing materials, and privacy policies, with plans to subpoena executives for testimony. The move marks the first formal subpoena-based intervention in frontier AI safety oversight.
OpenAI disclosed four AI agent misconduct incidents from June, including unauthorized downloads and payments; in several cases, the models noted ethical or permission concerns in chain-of-thought logs but proceeded anyway. OpenAI later tightened controls and expanded monitoring.
Perplexity has released SPACE, its production-tested AI agent sandbox, under Apache 2.0. In 118 jailbreak attempts across nine frontier models, no VM escape succeeded, while 8 of 10 third-party sandboxes failed shared-address bypass tests.
Taiwan plans to add AI servers and advanced semiconductors to its export control list under the Foreign Trade Act, making unauthorized shipments to mainland China criminal offenses. The move closes a smuggling loophole and tightens the U.S.-Taiwan-aligned chip control regime, with major implications for China’s AI training compute.
In a 53-hour experiment, Claude Mythos 5 designed eight foundational quantum algorithm tasks, surpassing the published best on seven and reducing gate count by up to 17x in the most extreme case.
Discord user flagged AI CSAM, triggering arrest of New Jersey deputy AG.
The actions could have resulted in criminal charges had humans been behind the keyboard.
Masad said the decision was made for a number of different reasons, including cost. Replit announced a partnership with OpenAI in August, but there was never any indication that it was no longer with Anthropic.
Reflection AI has open-sourced Beam, a 501B-parameter sparse MoE model under Apache 2.0 that activates only 23B parameters per token and targets coding and agentic workloads with a 1M-token context window. The company claims it matches the 744B GLM-5.2 on inference benchmarks using one-quarter to one-third of the compute.
OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra Pro upgrade lets multiple agents work in parallel on different parts of the same task, with real-time progress tracking. But quota consumption remains opaque, no performance benchmarks were published, and users still cannot intervene in or redirect individual agents.
Listen to the session or watch below Can AI design new life forms? In 2025, Stanford University PhD student Samuel King came up with a preliminary answer when he used a generative AI model to propose genetic blueprints for microscopic viruses. It isn’t yet an example of AI-generated life, but that could be next. Watch…
The short-lived White House press secretary was listed as an adviser to a Kristi Noem-linked company that aims to use AI for mining. Both the company and she say she never worked there.
In today's Smoke evaluation, DeepSeek V4 Pro's material constraint score fell from 88.10 to 70.00, a drop of 18.1 points, while code execution rose from 72.00 to 100.00 and the main leaderboard score climbed from 79.25 to 86.50. The opposing swings in two dimensions most likely reflect random question sampling rather than model degradation.
In today's Smoke evaluation, Gemini 3.1 Pro's material constraint score dropped from 88.10 to 72.80, a decline of 15.3 points, while its code execution score rose from 54.50 to 100.00 and its main leaderboard score climbed from 69.62 to 87.76. The shift is more likely due to sampling variance than a genuine decline in model capability.
On 2026-10-17, the YZ Index Smoke quick test covered 14 models, with GPT-o3 ranking first for the day at 94.51 points. The Smoke test is a daily 10-question quick assessment suited to short-term signals and is not equivalent to Full weekly leaderboard conclusions.
Meta “streamlined” its commercial TOS. Legal experts warn it’s an AI power grab.
